| Object type: | globular star cluster | |
| Size: | 7' | |
| Magnitude: | 8.2 mag | |
| Constellation: | Sge | |
| Distance: | 13,000 Ly | |
| Notes: |
M71 is a loose but beautiful globular cluster in the small constellation
Sagitta. For a long time, the classification of M71 as a globular cluster
was uncertain, many astronomers thought it was a rather condensed open
cluster. The golden-yellow color of M71 is a consequence of the reddening of the star light by dust: E(B-V) = 0.31 mag. About half a degree to the SSW (near the bottom border of the above image), large but faint and sparse open cluster H20 (Harvard 20) is situated, which is fairly difficult to recognize. |
