On October 24th, periodic Comet Holmes (17P) brightened dramatically:

by nearly a million times!

The comet erupted from a very dim magnitude 17 to about magnitude 2.

The bright star below Holmes is Alpha Per.

The appearance of Holmes in year 1892 is very similar to the appearance in 2007!
